Agricultural antics at first Buxton Show

From sheep racing to dogs herding ducks, there was plenty of farmyard frolics at the first annual Buxton Show last weekend.

The three-day event at the Pavilion Gardens, on St John’s Road, formed part of Buxton Family Festival.

Featuring The Sheep Show, from Norfolk, crowds enjoyed a sheering demonstration, a sheepdog and duck display and sheep racing over a furlong.

Festivities also included children’s rides and activities, and more than 70 stalls of food and drink, arts and crafts, jewellery and accessories for the home and garden, as well as live music in the bandstand.

Co-organiser Chris Marrison said she hoped the mini agricultural fair would become an annual event.

She said: “The weather wasn’t particularly good but the sheep show went down really well.

“We knew we had to do something in the summer holidays, having lost the Gilbert and Sullivan Festival and we wanted it to be family friendly.

“We’re planning on holding the next one on bank holiday weekend next year and getting more of Buxton involved, like Poole’s Cavern and Go Ape. We’re hoping it will become bigger and bigger.”

Councillor Caitlin Bisknell, leader of High Peak Borough Council, said: “This first family festival has been a big success and the first Buxton Show was a great finale to a packed fortnight of events.

“The council and the businesses and venues that have taken part in this festival have been delighted with the response from local people and visitors to the High Peak.

“We’re already planning for next year and hope to work with more local companies and individuals to strengthen the High Peak connections and showcase all that this beautiful area of the country has to offer.

“The date for the second Buxton Show has already been agreed as the August Bank Holiday weekend next year so save the date in your diaries and we look forward to seeing you there!”
