Cafe will damage economy

May I draw your readers’ attention to what is being proposed on the site of Bennett’s old shop on King Street Bakewell.

After a successful appeal planning permission has been granted to Costa to open a café seating between 60/80 people.

It will be open between 6.30am and 7.30pm. The damage to the local economy by the addition of such a large enterprise should not be underestimated.

Not only will some of the small independent cafes be affected by a reduction in footfall resulting in their possible closure, there will also be an impact on suppliers who provide the existing coffee shops with produce. Costa has confirmed they will not be using locally sourced produce.

If small businesses close this will also affect the local trades people, builders, electricians, plumbers and the like who are employed to maintain business premises.

Costa has applied for 4 illuminated signs on a brash red facia, which is not at all in keeping with the surrounding buildings in the conservation area of King Street.

This in my opinion will be a real eyesore.

If you wish to maintain the uniqueness of Bakewell please sign the petitions in the shops displaying “STOP COSTA”.
