It was party time in the Peaks when villagers held their annual summer carnival.

Youlgrave hosted a week of festivities, ending in the carnival on Saturday.

The party spirit kicked off on Sunday, July 8, with a family treasure hunt and throughout the week there were events such as bingo and a children’s disco.

The wheelbarrow race due to be held on Friday had to be cancelled due to rain, however the residents were fortunate to have a dry day on Saturday for the main event.

Leah Brindley, of the Youlgrave Carnival Committee, which organised the festivities, said: “The weather held out for us for the carnival, which did help.”

At the beginning of the carnival 11–year–old Libby Tabbenor, who attends Youlgrave Primary School, was crowned carnival queen, after that the Bakewell Silver Band played and there was a procession of floats through the village.

Visitors could go on fair rides and a bouncy slide, as well as enjoy hot pork cobs supplied by New Close Farm in Bakewell.

New this year was ten pin zorbing, during which people had the chance to get into giant inflatable balls and knock over pins.

Leah said: “The carnival is a brilliant day out, it gets all the community together.

“Even people who don’t live in the village any more came.”

The carnival has been going for five years now, prior to that it hadn’t taken place for about ten years.

Leah, who has been a member of the carnival committee for four years, said: “We have had a lot of good reports back about this year’s event.

“We had more people turn up than we were expecting because of the weather and everybody seemed to have a good time.

“The committee would like to give a big thanks to everybody who turned up, we are really grateful for their support.”
