Football meets cricket
Cricketer Harold Larwood meets young footballers on Causeway Lane, Matlock in 1930.
This photograph was submitted Jeff Holmes of Tibshelf and shows a team of young footballers meeting the great England cricket player, Harold Larwood.
The snap was taken at Causeway Lane in 1930 shortly before a football match in which Ashover School were playing ‘The Rest’.
Ashover went on to win the game 3-2, but the young sportsman were clearly all pleased to meet the great England cricketer.
Mr Holmes said that Harold Larwood had been visiting a cousin in Matlock – a rector at one of the local churches – during the Australia team’s tour of England that year.
Larwood, who played for Nottinghamshire, was known as an accurate fast bowler who took more than 1,427 first-class wickets, and played a vital part in the famous ‘Bodyline’ Ashes series in 1932/33.
Those on the photo include Jeff Holmes, Harry Dent, Flib Marriott, Ken Fletcher, Fred Haslam, Fred Buxton, Bern Wall, Bill Townhall and Doug Wood.
