Matlock in the Victorian days

A scene of Matlock in 1863.

A scene of Matlock in 1863.

This old photograph was taken almost a 150 years ago and shows Matlock town looking very different to how we see it today.

Although Bank Road and the current County Offices lend a certain familiarity to the photograph, it’s very interesting to see trees and fields in the place of what is now covered in bricks, mortar and tarmac.

It’s also remarkable to see how todays old houses looked as new builds in 1863 with their unweathered bricks and crisp slate roofs.
