WITH plans to create a good old-fashioned British-style celebration to mark the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, these snaps were taken at the Silver Jubilee in 1977.

The photos have been submitted by photographer Colin Brookes of Darley Hillside.

He said a number of events had been organised by the Hillside Silver Jubilee Committee, chaired by the late John Billingham, including a cookery demonstration, an antiques roadshow and an auction of donated items.

Keeping with the silver theme, the money raised from the day was used to buy a silver spoon for each child who lived on the hillside. A feast was held in Stancliffe Hall and a dance was organised for later in the evening.

“There was a real community spirit and everyone enjoyed themselves,” added Colin.
