After scoffing numerous pies, puddings and chocolates over the holiday period it's time to get back to planning healthy meals.
While I'd rate my culinary skills as fairly good – you really do need to try my trout with gooseberry sauce – I'm not so hot when it comes to corralling different food groups into a well-balanced and tasty menu.
Fortunately, help is at hand from
the Food Standards Agency. It's white-coated dieticians have come up with the Eatwell Plate, a visual feast of food that shows the different types and proportions of foods we need to have a healthy and balanced diet.
Split into five sections, the plate is an at-a-glance guide to what amount of fruit and vegetables, bread, pasta, rice, meat, fish, fat, sugar and dairy products we should be consuming on a daily basis.
You don't need to get the balance right for every meal, but over the course of a week it'll show you how to balance everything out, with plenty of advice, tips and mouth-watering recipes.
What's more, it'll also teach you how to adjust your diet to account for an active or sedentary lifestyle, and point you in the direction of further information.
