Top films on a summer night

Derby-BASED arts centre Quad has announced details of a tour of outdoor film screenings across the region for its Summer Nights Film Festival.

The festival will tour a selection of classic and contemporary films to locations throughout Derbyshire, all presented on a giant screen by Quad.

Summer Nights offers the chance to bring a picnic and enjoy the splendour of the great outdoors for a unique cinematic experience.

Starting in early May and continuing until September, the venues range from Renishaw Hall in the north of the county to Calke Abbey in the south, and include many National Trust properties.

Derbyshire and the Peak District have long been the filming location for hit films such as Jane Eyre, Pride and Prejudice and Women in Love, and the films include some screenings showing in the original locations in which they were shot.

The films scheduled to be screened include some classics: The Thirty Nine Steps (1935) Women In Love (1969) Battle of Britain (1969) Pride and Prejudice (2005); some family features: Jurassic Park (1993) Grease (1978) Mamma Mia (2008) The Adventures of Tintin (2011) and some more recent releases: Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011) Jane Eyre (2011) War Horse (2011) The Artist (2012) and The Woman In Black (2012).

The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in June will also link the films The Queen (2006) The King’s Speech (2010) at Renishaw Hall, and there will be specially arranged talks prior to the screenings.

Pre-screening events such at other venues include live music, food and craft fairs and Spitfire plane on display at Rolls-Royce Leisure in Derby.

The dates and venues of the Summer Nights Tour are: Elvaston Castle (Friday May 4-5), Sudbury Hall (May 11-12), Renishaw Hall (June 1-2), Queen’s Park, Chesterfield (July 27-28), Calke Abbey (August 10-11), Kedleston Hall (August 17-18), Hardwick Hall (August 31-September 1), The Lime Kiln, Wirksworth (September 7-8), The Pavilion, Rolls-Royce Leisure, Derby (September 14-15).
