Chamber choir’s Bakewell concert
Renaissance Voices
A concert of choral music by Renaissance Voices is to take place at All Saints Church in Bakewell on Saturday, October 20, from 7.30pm.
This Early Music chamber choir of around 24 singers, established in 1989, brings together musicians from a wide area of the Midlands and North, to promote performances of Renaissance and Baroque music from a base in the Peak District.
The choir’s repertoire includes English and Italian madrigals, French chansons, Tudor anthems, latin motets, masses and psalm settings, mostly performed a cappella.
Major performances may involve an instrumental group or soloist. These have included a viol consort, cornett and sackbutt ensemble, and a baroque ensemble of recorders, harpsichord and bass viol. The choir has performed major baroque choral works with orchestral accompaniment, including Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas, Handel’s Dixit Dominus and Monteverdi’s Vespers of 1610 using period instruments.
The programme includes Tudor anthems by Orlando Gibbons, motets by Heinrich Schutz, English madrigals by Thomas Weelkes, Ayres by John Dowland, French chansons and many more.
Admission £8 on the door, under 16s get in free. Refreshments are available.
