Elizabeth Tubby as Mad Margaret in Rosehill Operatic's 2012 production of Ruddigore.

Ruddigore, or The Witch’s Curse, by Gilbert and Sullivan, is to be presented by Rose Hill Musical Society from February 21-25 at Derby’s Guildhall Theatre.

Written just after The Mikado, when the author and composer were at their peak, this comic opera is a parody of Victorian melodrama and includes tales of witches, curses, disguises and deceit, evil baronets, sweet innocent maidens, and a picture gallery of ghosts who step out of their frames to inflict agonies on their descendants.... and, of course, a happy ending.

Rose Hill Musical Society’s cast is a mixture of regular and new performers.

In the midst of the mayhem, Sir Ruthven Murgatroyd (disguised as Robin Oakapple, a young farmer) is played by Allister Jordan, and his brash sailor foster-brother, Richard Dauntless, by Craig Arme, who has rapidly become a favourite with Rose Hill audiences.

Nicola Harris, in her third appearance with the society, plays sweet Rose Maybud, Dave Stapleton is the wicked Sir Despard Murgatroyd and Elizabeth Tubby plays the lovelorn Mad Margaret.

Jayne Brewster Beard, a splendid Little Buttercup in last year’s HMS Pinafore, takes the part of Dame Hannah.

Longstanding Rose Hill members Tony Eley and Peter Featherstone respectively play Old Adam, Sir Ruthven’s faithful servant, and Sir Roderic Murgatroyd, the leading ghost. Paula Bettison and Ellen Hill are the two leading bridesmaids.

Stage direction is by Beverley Graham and Bryan Clarke is musical director.

The performances are at 7.30pm nightly with an additional Saturday matinee from 2.30pm.

Tickets are £10 for Tuesday, £11 for Wednesday and £12 for Thursday to Saturday.

They may be ordered from Peter Featherstone on 0115 9258717.
