Crime pays in Quad’s season

Crime and punishment themes feature in movies being shown at Derby’s arts centre Quad during January.

The Hunt is a Scandinavian offering. This Danish film was the winner of the Best Actor award at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year for the moving central performance from Mads Mikkelsen.

A divorced teacher (Mikkelsen) lives a solitary life while fighting for custody of his son. His life is slowly getting better, thanks to a new girlfriend and some good news from his son but that is about to be shattered by an innocent little lie. The director is Thomas Vinterberg.

The Hunt (15 with English subtitles) is screened on January 18, 20 and 21 at 6pm and on January 19 at 8.40pm.

Seven Psychopaths is an American/British move featuring a borderline alcoholic screenwriter (Colin Farrell) who is struggling to get his new screenplay up and running.

All he has is a title “Seven Psychopaths”.

In an attempt to help him, his actor friend Billy (Sam Rockwell) inadvertently drags him into the world of the Los Angeles criminal fraternity when Billy and his partner Hans (Christopher Walken) dognap a gangster’s (Woody Harrelson) Shih Tsu.

Director Martin McDonough follows In Bruges with this riotous black comedy, featuring extended cameos from Tom Waits, Abbie Cornish, Harry Dean Stanton and Gabourey Sidibe (Precious).

Seven Psychopaths (15) is screened on January 18 and 22 at 8.30pm and also on January 19 at 6pm, on January 23 at 3.15pm and 6.15pm and on January 24 at 6pm and 8.40pm.

Love Crime is a French film set within the sterile offices of a powerful multinational corporation.

Two women reach a face-off. Isabelle (Ludivine Sagnier) is a young executive under the orders of Christine (Kristin Scott Thomas), who is a powerful woman she absolutely idolizes. Confident of her control over Isabelle, Christine leads her into a confusing, perverse game of seduction and domination. A dangerous game that goes too far, it is directed by Alain Corneau.

Love Crime (15) is screened on January 28 at 6.15pm and on January 29 at 8.35pm.

Cinema tickets are £7.60 full price and £6 concessions. For more information or to book seats for any of the film screenings, call Quad’s box office on 01332 290606 or see www.derbyquad.co.uk/whats-on-listing/film
