Sinbad sets sail for Chapel Players
Sinbad: The cast of Chapel Players production of Sinbad.
AHOY there shipmates! Sinbad the Sailor is coming to Chapel-en-le-Frith.
Chapel Players are set to perform the show, by Graham Barraclough, for their annual panto, which starts next week.
Although not one of the most often performed these days, Sinbad does go back a long way in the pantomime tradition, a version having been featured at Drury Lane in 1814.
The story is derived from the Seven Voyages of Sinbad in the Arabian Nights though Shahrazad, the beautiful story-teller of the Arabian Nights may have some trouble recognising some aspects of Chapel’s tale, in which the handsome Sinbad (Jenni Hague), his mum Sadie (Pete Goddard), daft brother Izzy (Helena Jodrell) and the other Goodies sail off to the Island of Fire to rescue the beautiful Princess Serena (Debbie Simpson) from the clutches of the wicked villain Rahgbag (Dan Mason) and his evil henchmen.
The plot is complicated by a very temperamental volcano, the voracious Roc Bird, a ghoulish ghost and the mad Old Woman of the Sea.
Sinbad will be performed at the Playhouse, Eccles Road, Chapel, on Friday January 18, Saturday, January 19, Thursday January 24, Friday January 25 and Saturday January 26 at 7.30pm, with matinees at 2pm on Saturday January 19 and Saturday January 26. Tickets, priced £6 for adults and £4 for concessions, are available from Halls Mica Hardware in Chapel.
