An Olympic flag will be raised in the Dales this Sunday to celebrate London officially becoming the 2012 host city.
The flag will be raised above the town hall in Matlock by Dales middle-distance running star Josh Moody at 2.30pm.

The event will coincide with the raising of 500 flags across the UK and at British embassies and military outposts across the world – and marks the end of the 2008 Beijing games.

Cllr Mike Longden, community and environment committee vice chairman, said: "The district council is proud to be raising the Olympic handover flag to celebrate the games coming to Great Britain.

"There are many potential Olympic stars living in the Derbyshire Dales and the district council will help to support their development over the next four years and beyond," he added.

Organising committee chairman Sebastian Coe said: "We are delighted so many local authorities share our excitement and are proudly displaying the Olympic handover flag to mark this very special moment on our journey to 2012."
