Dales traders say they may lodge claims for damages after their shopfronts were splashed with tar during pavement work.
Matlock shop owners, councillors and civic leaders hit out at the standard of pavement repairs on the north side of the River Derwent last week.

And Matlock Business Group members were angry after Derbyshire County Council extended the work to Dale Road this week.

Chairman Richard Short said: "Now they have done Dale Road and it's even worse.

"It's the fact they have splashed the stuff up the shopfronts and there's lumps and bumps everywhere – they haven't even taken the masking tape off in places.

"There could be people putting in claims, it's so terrible," he added.

Mr Short complained to council chiefs this week, but was unhappy with their response.

He said: "The man in charge told me it's up to his expectations. I said he must have very low expectations."

Derbyshire County Council said it had not received any claims and that it would assess the pavement work.

A spokeswoman said: "We'll be inspecting the work carried out by our contractors and if we don't feel it's good enough, we'll ask them to do it again."
