A human body, thought to date from the Iron Age, has been unearthed by archaeologists during a dig at a Peak District beauty spot.
The prehistoric skeleton emerged as volunteers, who were taking part in a lottery-funded dig, excavated the site of an ancient hillfort near Monsal Head.

Ann Hall, Longstone Local History Group project manager, said: "We quickly stopped everything, then archaeologists spent a very careful afternoon excavating the body."

Experts will use radiocarbon dating to establish its age, sex and possible origins over the coming months.

Dig director Dr Clive Waddington said: "The excavation has been tremendously rewarding because it has supplied significant new information for understanding hillforts in the Peak District."

More than 160 schoolchildren and 78 volunteers helped on the dig.

Eee, would you Adam and believe it? Fancy putting children through an experience like that! I mean, the little tykes'll be scarred for life, if I know anything about children (and I should do because, after all, I was one once!)

These youngsters shouldn't be exhuming bodies! They should be tucked up safely in school learning their three R's, for Pete's sake.

Which brings me on to this question. Who IS Pete? I don't know. If somebody could furnish me with this information, I'd be as happy as Larry.

I worked with a chap called Larry, once. Shot himself.
