The green message was brought home to residents when Derbyshire County Council held a series of events to mark compost awareness week.
Council staff took to the roads to encourage people to compost more rubbish in a bid to reduce waste.

County council cabinet member for environmental services, Cllr Brian Lucas, said: "It's easy to compost and you can turn more than a third of your rubbish into compost for your garden.

"It's important that we all try and reduce the amount of rubbish we send to landfill.

"Using a compost bin really makes a big difference to the amount of rubbish produced."

Compost bins can be ordered at a discounted price of £17 by phoning 0845 077 0757 or by visiting www.recyclenow.com/homecomposting. The price includes delivery.
