Handy link for police
Police are to benefit from a £50 million Government pledge to provide officers with hand-held computers.
Derbyshire police are amongst the few forces to benefit from the new scheme which will see 10,000 of the devices used by officers up and down the country in 27 forces.
A spokesperson from Derbyshire Constabulary confirmed that funding for the handheld equipment was in place but they were not sure how soon the computers would be in use.
The device will enable officers out on patrol to spend less time returning to the station and more time on the frontline.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown claimed last year that the devices, linked to main systems and databases, could cut average paperwork by 99 minutes a shift.
Ailsa Beaton, of the Association of Chief Police Officers (Acpo) which selected the successful force bids, said there had been nowhere near enough computers to meet demand from forces across the country.
