A BUXTON police sergeant trekked through plunging temperatures and snowdrifts five feet deep in a treacherous charity challenge.

With a backpack loaded to 40lbs in weight, Sergeant Russ Barlow hiked across the Kinder plateau where the temperature plummeted to -15C.

He was joined by Davey Lawton, the brother of Russ’ wife and fellow Derbyshire officer PC Ellen Barlow.

They were originally due to take on the gruelling Fan Dance challenge in the Brecon Beacons but had to cancel it because they couldn’t reach Wales.

The walk was to raise money for the intensive care unit at Newcastle Victoria Hospital, where Ellen’s dad Dave was cared for after suffering a cardiac arrest in the city.

Russ, who is in charge of Buxton Safer Neighbourhood Team, said: “It was touch and go whether the actual Fan Dance challenge was going to go ahead at all so we decided we would do our own locally instead of travelling to Wales.

“We trekked for almost the exact same distance with the same weight backpacks on, and it was a real challenge. The temperature varied from -5C to -15C on the hilltops and the visibility was so poor that it was almost a whiteout on the plateau.

“The wind was extremely strong, as well – at times, we could lean forward into it and take the full weight of our backpacks and the wind would keep us blown upright.

“But we had been preparing for these conditions and we were really pumped up for it so that pushed us on.”

Money raised will help with the upkeep of the hospital’s family rooms. To donate, visit www.justgiving.com/DLFanDance.
