A Chapel-en-le-Frith man has been honoured for more than seven decades of dedication to his football team.

Derek Eley has been supporting Derby County for over 70 years and has attended almost every home match since 1946.

Mr Eley, 95, was honoured by the club at their opening game of the season against Blackburn Rovers at Pride Park when he was entertained by the club’s directors and watched the match from the director’s box.

Before the start of the game, he was presented on the pitch with a Derby County Football Club shirt signed by the current club players, by the club’s Chief Executive Sam Rush and former club centre-forward Roger Davies.

The match marked the 125th anniversary of the Football League, of which Derby County and Blackburn Rovers were founder members.

It ended in a one-all draw.

Mr Eley said he was delighted to have received the acknowledgement of his long support for the club.
