Bakewell sound barrier could be scrapped

Plans for a controversial £100,000 noise barrier, dubbed Bakewell’s Berlin Wall by campaigners, look set to be dropped following public outcry.

Derbyshire Dales District Council’s environment committee will meet on Thursday to discuss abandoning the barricade, which was proposed to go around the Agricultural Business Centre, on Agricultural Way, to reduce noise from the livestock market.

The council said nearby residents had complained about noise from the centre for many years and that since 2006, it had been seeking a satisfactory solution.

The authority spent nearly £10,000 on public consultations after two complaints were made about noise and came up with plans for the 180-metre wide, 5.5-metre high barrier, due to a ‘legal obligation’ to respond to complaints.

However, residents rallied together against the proposals, claiming the wall would ruin the character of the town.

The council has since teamed up with Bagshaws Auctioneers to reduce the noise from the market.

The authority is now proposing the barrier be scrapped in favour of a noise management plan that will seek to reduce individual sources of noise.

Peter Foley, the council’s corporate director, said: “Officers have been working very hard to find a solution which seeks a compromise to satisfy as many residents as possible whilst at the same time making sure the council meets its legal duty to do everything reasonably practicable to prevent a noise nuisance from occurring and I believe the proposals put forward for members to consider in this report will help to achieve this.”

Diane Gilmore, representing residents opposed to the plans for Coombs Road, said: “We’re delighted common sense has prevailed.

“Everyone who made their feelings known to the council, whether via objection to or on the ‘Stop the ABC wall’ Facebook page, has had a crucial role to play in helping to put an end to this ridiculous proposal.”
