Bakewell to host first food festival

foodies will have a day to remember with the launch of Bakewell’s first ever food festival.

Residents and businesses of the bustling market town have put their heads together to organise the event on Saturday, April 28.

Jill Fergusan, who manages publicity for the festival, said: “Bakewell has formed an events committee to try and bring some life to the town and involve members of the community including businesses.”

The committee has already hosted one successful event – its Christmas weekend last year.

Jill said that with the town being the home of the famous Bakewell pudding, as well as having several local suppliers of fresh produce, it seemed ideal to the committee to host a food festival.

“The event is for visitors as well as for the local people,” she explained.

“We’ve got lots and lots to be proud of.”

There will be various food stalls around the town centre as well as a farmers market at the Agricultural Centre.

Hartington’s Cookery School will be at Rutland Mill offering cookery displays and author Paul Hudson will be signing his book ‘Mrs Ann Greaves of the Rutland Arms’ be at the Rutland Arms Hotel between noon and 3pm.

There will be a hog roast at New Close Farm and the Tiroler Stuberl will be hosting an Australian barbecue.

The Bakewell Tart shop will be baking a giant Bakewell tart and the Old Original Bakewell Pudding Shop will be hosting the Bakewell Pudding experience every hour between 10am and 4pm.

There will be ‘taster’ tickets available from the festival information stall for £5 per person, which allow people the chance to sample up to ten different foods.

The ticket also allows up to 20 per cent off in participating cafes, restaurant and pubs, excluding alcoholic drinks.
