Baking festival is a recipe for success

Bakewell’s mayor has high hopes of attracting foodies from all of the world to sample culinary delights as part of the town’s first ever baking festival.

Paul Morgans said he wanted to set up a baking festival when he first took up the role of mayor last year and is now putting his plan into action, organising the event to take place on June 8 and 9.

“The whole idea of it is to bring the whole of Bakewell together and promote us on a national and international level,” he explained.

The Bakewell Baking Festival would take place throughout the town including cooking demonstrations and Paul is even seeing if he can get some celebrity chefs on board.

He got the idea to hold a baking festival from the famous Bakewell pudding.

“What Bakewell has got is the heritage of it’s pudding and I want to use that to showcase the town,” Paul said.

The festival has received criticism for its proposed use of the main car park near the Coop, however Paul does not believe using the space will be a problem.

“We’ll be using about 100 spaces, there will still be 70 or 80 car parking spaces left however,” Paul said.

“We will be taking up less car parking than the normal market.”

He said he was also looking into a park and ride scheme for the festival using vintage buses and added that he wanted the baking festival to be in the centre of town rather than at the Bakewell Showground so that visitors would be more likely to use the shops and businesses.

“This is our town and we want to look after it,” he said.

“We don’t want to see it go the way of other towns.”
