Brief hencounter at annual event

FEATHERED athletes sent the crowds clucking mad at the World Championship Hen Races held in Bonsall. Around 300 racegoers packed The Barley Mow pub to cheer on the racing poultry as they pecked, clucked and flapped their way over the finish line at the 20th annual event.

Race commentator Jon Barry said: "All previous track records were 'cracked' as hen raising history was made in this year's most 'egg-citing' final ever.

"Three hens legged it down the 30-ft track in under five seconds.

"And in a mad 'scramble' for the line Dotty beat last year's winner Cookie by a short 'beak'."

First place went to Dotty and her owner Nicky Rosicilly, Cameron Nairn and his hen Cookie came in second, hen Sheila clinched third place for her owner Maggie Greaves and fourth place went to Rick Allen and his hen Regub.

The event was hosted for the first time by Colette Dewhurst and David Wragg, who took over the lease at the pub in October, and was sponsored by Thornbridge Brewery.

Colette said: "It was really good day and very well attended. The sun shone all day and we had a beer festival and barbecue."

A hen racing demonstration is to take place on Saturday at the reopening of the Pavilion in Matlock Bath.
