Green-fingered residents swapped peonies for prizes as the awards were handed out in this year’s Buxton in Bloom competition.

Following the successful revival of the popular horticultural contest by Buxton Town Team, a ceremony was held at the Pavilion Gardens on Sunday afternoon to present the winning entries with their cash prizes, plaques and certificates.

Among the prize-winners were Reg and Maria Birchenough of Dovedale Crescent, and Ann and John Luke of Ecclesbourne Drive, who were joint winners of the coveted title of Best Front Garden. Mrs Birchenough also shared the honours in the Best Hanging Basket category with Thelma Wellings, of Clough Street.

Dovedale Crescent took the overall Best Street title, Roseleigh Guest House picked up the Best Hotel prize and JD Hair & Beauty wowed the judges in the Best Retail category. The Wye Bridge toasted success in the Best Pub category.

Janine Morris, from the town team, said: “We have been delighted with the number and standard of the entries.”

The awards were presented by the University of Derby Deputy Vice-Chancellor Rod Dubrow-Marshall.
