Police have warned Fairfield residents to be vigilant to identity theft, after a series of midnight ‘bin dippers’ have been reported.

The offence was brought to officers’ attention after residents on three streets complained they saw raiders target their rubbish recipients in the early hours.

Police said bins on Queens Road, Bakewell Court and Victoria Park Road were burgled on waste collection days in July, when occupants had wheeled them to the curb.

It is believed the offenders, known as ‘bin dippers’, were rummaging through refuge for personal documentation such as bank statements.

Fairfield Safer Neighbourhood Team confirmed it was increasing patrols and speaking to the public to tackle the issue.

PCSO Patrick Haley said: “We would encourage residents to shred any confidential waste to prevent them from becoming a victim. We are erring on the side of caution, as we’ve yet to receive any complaints of identity theft, but have had quite a lot of reports of residential bin dipping for one month.”

To report any suspicious behaviour in the area call 101, the non-emergency number for Derbyshire Police, except in an emergency when the number is always 999.
