CLOSED: The New Inn pub in Buxton, which has had its licence suspended. NBUA 8-2-13 JC7.

A BUXTON pub has had its licence suspended after a major incident involving up to 80 people in which two people, including a police officer, were injured.

The incident occurred at the New Inn on Wednesday January 30 and led to police applying to High Peak Borough Council for a review of the premises’ licence.

Supporting documentation for the review states:

• There were children present in the premises at the time of the disorder and drinks continued to be served following fights breaking out and as police officers attempted to clear the premises.

• The DPS (Designated Premises Supervisor) and her staff do not appear to have attempted to clear the premises of drinks, glasses or clientele themselves when they first became aware of fighting or to have given the police any assistance in clearing the premises or to safeguard the children when fighting broke out.

• There appears to have been a complete lack of any management or control on the part of the DPS and/or her staff.

• A number of clientele involved in the incident were drunk, including one underage person and physical force was required on a number of occasions to get people to leave.

The decision notice adds: “The incident was a very serious incident involving a large number of up to 80 people, two people including a police officer suffered minor injuries and three people were arrested.

“The incident required the deployment of numerous police officers.

“The panel concluded that the inaction and actions of the staff were very likely to have made dealing with the incident more difficult for the police and put the safety of children, police officers and members of the public at risk, including members of the public and children passing the premises at the time.”

A notice in the pub’s window says that it is closed until further notice.

A full licensing hearing will take place later this month.
