Eccleston's Bradley Wiggins in action after the Bradley Foundation event

TOUR de France winner and Olympic gold medallist Bradley Wiggins and World Road Race Champion Mark Cavendish are set to take on the Peak District when the Tour of Britain returns to the region this month.

The cycle race, which runs from September 9 to September 16, sets off from Ipswich to Norfolk, on Sunday, on Stage 1, and during Monday’s Stage 2, on September 10, from Nottingham to Knowlsey Safari Park, it is due to come through Morridge, near Bakewell, and through the hills and moors of the surrounding Peak District.

Prior to reaching Morridge the route includes nearby Ilkeston and Little Eaton, The Amber Valley and Duffield. The first Category One Skoda King of the Mountains climb of the race takes it into the Derbyshire Dales with a steep opening through Turnditch.

It will then descend into Ashbourne before taking a climb towards the Peak District National Park with a long main road drag after Fenny Bentley near the Tissington Trail. The race continues to Alstonefield, Hulme End and the Manifold Valley and Warslow before the day’s final climb at Morridge, near Bakewell. The race continues through Flash and up the A54 Allgreave before going on to Cheshire’s Peak District and finishing at Knowsley Safari Park.

Fans will be able to cheer on a variety of star riders. Those listed to take part alongside Wiggins and Cavendish include Italian star Ivan Basso and many stage winners from the Giro D’Italia and the Vuelta a Espana.

Around 100 riders will be taking part among 16 teams including a Great Britain Team.

Race Director Mick Bennett said: “It is only right that in what has so far been a fantastic year for cycling in Britain that we can showcase the next generation of British talent. Fans can look forward to seeing six very talented athletes all of whom are names to watch for the future.”

The Great Britain provisional line up includes George Atkins, Owain Doull, Josh Edmondson, Thomas Moses, Alastair Slater and Simon Yates. See www.tourofbritain.com for details.
