Plans are well underway for this year’s Buxton Well Dressing Festival, which has successfully applied to become a registered charity.

Obtaining charity status will enable the organisation to use much of the money that is raised or earned towards preserving the ancient tradition of the Buxton Well Dressing Festival.

This year’s festival will commemorate the centenary of the start of the First World War in several events: St Ann’s Well dressing will reflect the theme, while representatives from local cadet groups and the British Legion will take part in the blessing ceremony on July 6.

There will be a poetry competition with a World War One theme with classes for children and adults, and a historical presentation by Chris Simpson will take place at Burbage Institute at 7.30pm on July 7.

The market place well will celebrate the 50th anniversary of Buxton Mountain Rescue Team and their fundraising appeal, while the young people’s well will be dressed by Buxton Community School pupils.

The crowning of the 2014 queen and rosebud takes place at St John’s Church on July 6 with special guest gold medal-winning paralympic cyclist Anthony Kappes MBE, who is from Chapel-en-le-Frith.

Carnival day is on Saturday July 12 when there will once again by a fly past from a Spitfire from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.
