Charlotte Horton receives her Walter Lawrence Trophy from Matthew Fleming

DARLEY Dale CC cricketer Charlotte Horton has received a prestigious award for women’s cricket, handed over during a presentation evening at Lord’s earlier this month.

Charlotte, 26, from Starkholmes, scored 177 not out while playing for Derbyshire Women against Northants Women in the Women’s County Championship game at the County Ground, Derby, earlier this year, to win The Walter Lawrence Trophy for 2012 for the highest score by a woman player in any competition during the season.

The trophy is sponsored by Veuve Clicquot, who also sponsor the presentation evening, held in the Long Room at Lord’s.

Charlotte, who is an ex-pupil of Anthony Gell School, Wirksworth, scored 318 runs in the only four games she played for Derbyshire Women in this rain-affected summer, giving her a superb average of 106.

She received her award on the night from former Kent and England all-rounder Matthew Fleming.

The evening was chaired by John Barclay, recent president of MCC and chairman of cricket at Sussex CCC.

This is the first year the Walter Lawrence Trophy has had a category for Women Cricketers.

The trophy was founded in 1936, lapsed during the Second World War and for some years after but was revitalised by the Lawrence family in 1966 and has been going ever since.

This year’s Senior Men’s winner was Scott Styris, the New Zealand international who won for the fastest 100 of the season, playing for Sussex in the Twenty20 competition.

Charlotte is currently studying at Bishop Grosseteste University College Lincoln for a PGCE in Primary Education, having already achieved a 2:1 degree in Sports Coaching and Sports Massage and Exercise Therapies at the University of Derby.
