Climber rescued from Matlock Bath

Rescuers rushed to Matlock Bath yesterday to help an injured climber.

Derby Mountain Rescue team were called at lunchtime to a climber who had been injured whilst climbing a popular rock face, known as Wild Cat Crag, at Matlock Bath.

The 50–year–old man, from Sheffield, along with a friend, had been climbing the crag high above the River Derwent, when a large rock become dislodged and fell on top of him, causing injuries to his back and legs.

The Derbyshire, Leicestershire and Rutland Air Ambulance were first on scene, landing their helicopter in a small section of public gardens by the river.

They provided initial medical treatment to the casualty, supported by an EMAS paramedic.

Twenty members of the mountain rescue team attended the incident and used a body splint, a specialised stretcher and a rope system to carry the casualty down a treacherous muddy slope to the riverside path and back to the waiting helicopter.

He was then flown to Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham for further treatment.

A Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) also attended the incident, ready to provide additional support if required.
