Community in uproar as council approves Bakewell Road proposal

Members of the public ‘booed’ councillors as they voted in favour of controversial plans for the centre of Matlock last night.

Despite fierce opposition from Matlock Town Council, Matlock Civic Association, many local businesses and residents, Derbyshire Dales District Council is to forge ahead with its preferred proposal for the Bakewell Road site, which includes a 38,000 sqft food store and budget hotel.

Many local people were left with a bad taste in their mouths after protesting that they had not been consulted on the proposals.

However district council chiefs claim that now the preferred developer, Henry Davidson Developments, has been chosen, they will enter the planning stage, which will include a period of consultation.
