Community works together to help youths

Police in Wirksworth will be working with local councillors, residents and youngsters to potentially build a youth shelter in the town.

The shelter would provide a place for youngsters to gather and sit in even in bad weather and would be an alternative to gathering in bus stops or similar places.

The idea was mentioned at the Wirksworth and Middleton Safer Neighbourhood Team governance meeting in early January after pupils at Anthony Gell school thought it up. Officers from the team, along with local councillors, school staff and partner agencies, will now look at the finer details of having a youth shelter installed.

They will then be asking for local people’s thoughts on the project, including where the shelter could be located.

Sergeant Nick Reason said: “The youngsters in Wirksworth are very well-behaved but it’s important for us to keep giving them things to do.

“A purpose-built youth shelter would mean they have a place to gather, whether that’s in the warmer summer months or in colder weather.

“We will be working with the schools, local councils and other agencies over the coming months to try and bring this idea to life.”
