Council apologises over tweet

Derbyshire County Council has apologised for tweeting about roadworks as the nation fell silent on Remembrance Sunday.

At 11.01am, the authority issued a message on the social networking site to raise awareness about resurfacing work on Wheatley Road in Two Dales.

The tweet – which was written last week and mistakenly scheduled to be published on the poignant day – attracted an angry response from Kat Mayall, of Whitwell, who replied: “While everyone held a two-minute silence to remember our fallen soldiers, you thought it good to tweet. Very respectful. Not.”

A county council spokesman said: “The tweet about pre-planned roadworks was written last week and scheduled in advance to go out on Twitter. Sadly, it was mistakenly scheduled to go out at 11am on November 10 without it being realised the date fell on Remembrance Sunday.

“This was down to human error and we apologise for any offence caused.”

The spokesman added that the authority held two minutes of silence at its headquarters in Matlock at 11am on Monday. Across Derbyshire, thousands of people – including dignitaries from the council – honoured and remembered Britain’s war dead with a two-minute silence on Sunday.
