Council defends decision as public rage

‘So much for democracy’ and ‘it’s a closed shop’ were just some of the jeers shouted by the public as councillors debated Matlock’s future.

There was an air of disappointment and mistrust at the Town Hall when the majority of members voted in favour of a developer that has proposed a massive supermarket for Bakewell Road.

Leader of the council, Lewis Rose, claims there is no need for the public to give up faith in its authority however, as the fate of the town has by no means been sealed.

“We have chosen a developer, not a development,” he maintained, adding that members of the public would eventually get their say on the all–important regeneration scheme.
