Council rewards community heroes

The achievements of those who have sacrificed themselves for the good of the community have been rewarded.

Derbyshire County Council hosted its annual Excellence in the Community Awards in Buxton to honour individuals, groups and charities that make a difference to the lives of others.

Those honoured included was Leonard Twigg, of Bakewell, who has been doing voluntary work for more than 60 years for organisations such as the Baslow and Bubnell branch of the Royal British Legion, the Youth Club for Baslow and the Scouts.

John Wardle, of Ashover, who among his achievements has been a director of North Derbyshire Voluntary Action and started a Shopperbus scheme in Ashover, was also named alongside Chris Whittall, of Wirksworth, who was recognised for his work with the Wirksworth Colts.

Lynne Pheasey, of Bakewell, was rewarded for her work with the Bakewell Brownies and Bakewell Carnival, among other things, and Wessington Green Local Nature Reserve Management Committee was recognised for looking after its village green since it was declared a Local Nature Reserve in 2004.

The awards recognised achievements in six categories – fund-raising for good causes, volunteering in the community, protecting Derbyshire’s environment, helping make Derbyshire a safer place to live, work and visit, improving life by helping create closer, caring and active communities and promoting Derbyshire through sporting, musical, academic or artistic success.

Cllr Andrew Lewer, leader of Derbyshire County Council, said: “Our annual Excellence in the Community Awards are our way of saying thank you to some amazing people who do so much to support and improve communities across Derbyshire. Every day an army of volunteers go the extra mile to make Big Society work across the county, and we are very fortunate to have people who volunteer, raise money, look after our environment, and help others stay safe.

“We hope highlighting successful individuals and projects will inspire other people to get involved and play a positive role in their community.”

Winners received certificates and glass trophies for their efforts.
