County council dismisses claims it is to sell Matlock offices

The council has dismissed claims that it is actively seeking a buyer for their Matlock offices.

Derbyshire County Council has issued a statement following reports that it is in the process of trying to sell the County Offices, in Smedley Street.

Leader Councillor Anne Western said: “We’re in an unprecedented financial position – facing a £157m shortfall in our budget, mainly due to reductions in funding from central Government.

“It means we’re having to assess every service the county council currently provides and every building we own.

“We haven’t advertised County Hall for sale and are not actively seeking a buyer. However, it costs over £2m a year to maintain County Hall and if someone came along and made a viable offer it is something which we would have to consider.

“What we won’t do is move away from County Hall without finding a suitable alternative use – leaving a decaying empty building and a negative effect on the Matlock economy. Any decision we make will be very carefully considered.”
