A Dove Holes hairdresser who crashed into a parked car in the afternoon, was found to be four times over the drink-drive limit, a court heard.

Gaynor Holmes told police she had had a glass of wine with her lunch and may have had a mouthful of vodka to take a tablet in the morning.

She later admitted having consumed eight to ten units of vodka through the night to help her sleep.

The 59-year-old, of Hallsteads, collided with a Mini Cooper on Buxton Road, Whaley Bridge, on June 13.

When tested she had 143 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35 microgrammes.

Karina Lyon, defending, said: “She shouldn’t have driven but didn’t want to let people down.”

At High Peak Magistrates’ Court last Wednesday, Chairman of the bench Robert McBlane said: “This is one of the highest readings I’ve ever seen. You’re very lucky you’re not going to prison.”

He sentenced Holmes to 16 weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months, banned her from driving for three years, gave her a four-month curfew and 180 hours’ of unpaid work, and ordered her to pay an £80 victim surcharge and £85 court costs.
