A group of convicts lent a perfectly legal hand at one Dales hospital to boost its fundraising efforts.

The offenders were drafted into Bakewell’s Newholme Hospital hospital where they got involved in crafts and other fundraising activities.

The collaboration – which was organised by sisters Lorraine Turner, an occupational therapist at Newholme Hospital and Joy Fox, community payback supervisor with Derbyshire Probation – helped the hospital to reach its target of £600 for a new chair-bed for relatives of patients with dementia.

Joy Fox said: “When I learnt of the fundraising from my sister Lorraine, I thought it was a great cause to support.

“The offenders really enjoyed helping out too and I was surprised at how many of them have, or had, relatives with some degree of dementia.”
