D-day for contentious village gas proposals

Controversial plans to drill for gas in a Derbyshire village are set to be decided next week.

Seven Star Natural Gas (SSNG) is seeking planning permission to carry out the extraction on land off Dark Lane, Calow, to generate electricity for up to 5,000 homes.

The firm hopes to carry out the operation round-the-clock every day of the week for a period of up to 15 years.

Planning chiefs at Derbyshire County Council will debate the contentious proposals at a meeting on Monday and also attend the site to help them come to a decision.

Protesters with the Calow Against Gas Extraction (CAGE) campaign group are preparing to oppose the plans on the day. Margi Senior, of CAGE, said: “This will be our last chance to oppose this application.”

Protesters fear the proposals will lead to more noise and have a visual impact on the village.

A public meeting held last year heard the plans would have a “disastrous” effect on Calow.

SSNG defended the proposals and insisted it was listening to villagers.
