Dales students achieve A* results

Dales students are celebrating after receiving their A level results and having their university places confirmed.

Teenagers across the district picked up their exam results on Thursday morning (August 19).

Although universities are receiving record applications and are filling up quicker than ever, many pupils from the area's three high schools are going on to further education.

This year is the first time A-level students can be graded a new higher grade of A*.

Anthony Gell School in Wirksworth were celebrating their best ever results, with nearly half of the results coming in as A*, A and B grades and the overall pass rate was 98 per cent.

Two students have gained places at Oxford University and another is going to UCL to study medicine.

Headteacher David Baker said that he was absolutely delighted with the results and congratulated all of the students on their fantastic achievements.

He said "Our students have worked incredibly hard to gain these results and I am extremely pleased that so many of them have got into the university courses of their choice".

Highfields were also pleased to see an improvement on last year's figures with A*-B grades at 54 per cent.

Harry Frost, 18, who received A*,A and A in French, German and Spanish is going to do Modern Languages at Birmingham University.

He told the Mercury: "I don't think exams are getting easier- I actually thought one of mine was horrific - but they're changing. There's a lot more focus on the actual courses now."

Head teacher Ramsey Tetlow said: "This year is the first time that A Level students will receive an A* grade, designed to reward high achievement on the more demanding A2 units. We are delighted that 8 per cent of all grades gained were A*.

"We are delighted that so many students have got their first choice universities and that only a handful will need to go through clearing."

At Lady Manners School three students- Hannah Cook, Madeleine Mayfield and Jennifer Watson - achieved the highest grades of A or A* in five full A Level subjects.

Nine further students achieved four Grade A or A* passes within their full A level results, with Catherine Davis getting A* in all four of her subjects.

More than half of all the grades achieved were graded A*, A or B.

Headteacher Duncan Meikle said: "Lots of students have performed particularly well this year. There is no doubt that the results overall are thoroughly well deserved.

"Congratulations to students and staff who have had to work very hard to achieve these excellent successes".

Younger students will be receiving their GCSE results on Tuesday next week (August 24).
