An eco–friendly holiday hideaway has beaten off competition to be shortlisted to a top national award.

Hoe Grange Holidays, in Brassington, has been shortlisted in the category of best self–catering accommodation provider in the UK in the Goldstar Awards by the Green Tourism Business Scheme (GTBS) – the World’s leading sustainable tourism accreditation programme.

The business is among 60 UK finalists drawn from a total of 2,400 contenders and is the only business in Derbyshire to be shortlisted.

Felicity Brown, who owns the business with her husband David, said “We are delighted to be finalists in these prestigious national awards.

“We hope our actions inspire guests and businesses alike to adopt sustainable practices, and minimise our impact on our beautiful Peak District countryside.”

Andrea Nicholas, director of Green Tourism, said: “The annual awards aim to honour those businesses and organisations that have done the most to promote sustainability within the industry by implementing cost–saving practices that help the environment, improve customer services and benefit the bottom line.”

“The Goldstar Awards are a recognition of the best of the best in Britain.”

Three quarters of the premises’ energy needs are produced on site with a 10kw wind turbine, solar power enhanced with a tracking system, heat pumps and zero waste to landfill. Together these initiatives have reduced carbon output by over 21 tonnes per year.

Felicity said there is not just an ethical reason to be eco–friendly, but a financial one too, because using renewable energy saves money.

The winner of the award will be announced in November.
