A village pub has bucked the trend of pub closures across the country by reopening with a fresh look and a new lease of life.

When the Jug and Glass, in Main Road, Lea, closed in February this year, it’s owner of 30 years Roy Fretwell decided he needed to do something to bring the business back to its former glory.

For the last ten years he has let the premises out however, after seeing business decline, the 61–year–old has taken the reigns once more - splashing £50,000 to refurbish the pub and bring it back to life.

“It was a bit shabby, but now I’m back at the helm so we have revamped everything – we’ve got a new kitchen and new carpets,” Roy, who lives in Lea, said.

“After it closed it took a month or so to get it open again.

“The first month there was a lot of work done.

“We started by just opening the bar and now everything is open.”

The pub has five letting rooms which have also been refurbished and Roy has employed a new chef, Owen Telford.

The kitchen was the last part of the business to open at the beginning of June, and now the business boasts a new menu to tempt customers with.

“It seems to be going down a storm,” he continued.

“The locals seem to like it and we have got a selection of real ales.”
