Digging up trail's past

KEEN historians braved the weather for a big dig on the High Peak Trail.

Derbyshire County Council’s countryside team hosted the three-day archaeological event at the site of the old engine house at Sheep Pasture Incline.

The team unearthed the remains of the engine house’s chimney foundations, which date back to the 1830s, and the channel which housed the great chains that hauled wagons up the incline.
