Discover Cromford

Some of the world’s oldest industrial housing will be open to the public as part of a celebration of the area’s heritage.

The Landmark Trust, a building preservation charity, is opening No. 10 North Street, Cromford, between noon and 4pm on Saturday and Sunday in association with the Derwent Valley Mills Discovery Days.

North Street is the earliest planned industrial housing in the world and is considered the finest of its type ever built.

It was built in 1771 by Richard Arkwright to house his mill workers.

The three–storey gritstone houses have one room on each floor, with a room for framework–knitting in the attic.
