Double festival fun in Bakewell
Bakewell was a hub of music, drama and creativity last week as visitors flocked to two festivals.
Not only was the town enjoying its annual Arts Festival but a number of talented musicians were also at the Showground for the its first Acoustic Music Festival.
The acoustic festival, which ran from Friday to Sunday, offered all genres of music, from rock to Latin to blues. Acts included The Crooked Fiddle Band, who came from Australia, Matlock skiffle band Please
Y'Self and popular ukulele duo The Re-Entrants.
Meanwhile, the thousands that visited Bakewell Arts Festival (BAF), which was on from August 6-15, enjoyed highlights such as Live on the Lorry, a dance party in the festival square and a production by Bakewell Youth Theatre. Many of the musicians performing there were on their way to Edinburgh Festival.
This year's event was the first of its kind as the festival committee enrolled the help of young people to ensure the event was more diverse and creative than ever.
BAF coordinator Janette Hockley-Webster said: "As we hoped and expected, the young arts community inside and also outside the area have risen to the twin challenges of very tight timetables and even tighter budgets to help to deliver an innovative, high quality
programme that was as impressive as they are.
"They have proved themselves to be a force to be reckoned with."
Les Singleton, owner of Ricci's restaurant in the town said: "It was super at the open mic night. To see the youngsters getting so involved as well, with such exuberance and not a hint of trouble.
"Long may BAF reign. It's a real jewel in Bakewell's year."
