A drink-driver was involved in a two-car crash at Brierlow Bar in Buxton, a court heard.

The collision, involving a Toyota Rav 4 and a Vauxhall Corsa, happened on Saturday February 1 on the A515, prosecutor John Cooper told High Peak Magistrates’ Court.

As part of their enquiries, police breathalysed the driver of the Corsa, Richard Marriott, but he failed the test. He was arrested and taken to the police station where he provided a reading of 68. The legal limit is 35.

Marriott, 27, of The Crescent, Risley, Derby, admitted drink-driving. He also had a drink-driving conviction from 2007, the court heard.

Annis Rowlands, defending, said: “He admitted drinking the evening before but stopped drinking ten hours before driving. He admits drinking spirits and shots. He felt fine to drive.

“When the police spoke to the defendant they simply asked him to provide because of the collision. He did not smell of alcohol and he didn’t seem in any way impaired to them.

“Brierlow Bar is an awkward junction at the best of times. It is more difficult for those who are not local to appreciate the speed vehicles are travelling at.”

Marriott was fined £370 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £37 surcharge. He was also banned from driving for three years.
