Duke speaks of his president's privilege
For this year's 180th Bakewell Show, the Duke of Devonshire has once again filled the prestigious presidential shoes.
The Duke said it was a great privilege to take on the role again and he was looking forward to an interesting two days.
On Wednesday morning the Duke could be found in the horticultural marquee, judging the scented carnations. He said he was impressed at the standard of floral entries as well as the prize-winning fruit and vegetables on show.
"I think it looks wonderful this year and it is interesting for people who have their own gardens to come and talk to the growers. The horticultural tent is one of the most important at the show.
"The hot weather and then the wet weather has made difficult growing conditions but people have worked very hard," he said.
The Duke added: "I'm looking forward to the grand parade and getting round and speaking to people.
"I think it is going to be an excellent two days, as it always is.
"There are a lot of people who come every year but also new faces. It is very important for the show to keep attracting new people."
The show, which is the largest tented agricultural event in the UK is also one of the oldest and is often known as the 'Little Royal'.
It has evolved over the years from its purely agricultural origins and is now a major agricultural and horticultural event with a wide range of animals on show along with show jumping, crafts and produce exhibitions.
