Businesses in the Dales are being urged to add a few drops of dye to their fuel tanks in a bid to drive down diesel theft.
With the price of fuel still high, thieves are increasingly targeting vehicles and siphoning out fuel so they can sell it on.
To combat the risk, Derbyshire Dales Community Safety Partnership is offering fuel dye kits to businesses when they sign up for Operation Dynamo.
The special dye can be added to tanks so that, if fuel is stolen, it will mark the thieves vehicle too and can be traced back to the rightful owner.
Businesses have to register for the scheme and are then given fuel dye kits to use on their fleets.
Warning signs are also provided and can be erected on the businesses’ sites to deter any potential thieves before they strike.
Sgt Nick Reason, from Matlock Safer Neighbourhood Team, said the kits were a simple yet effective way for firms to protect their fuel.
He said: “Large fuel tanks such as those on lorries and trucks can seem like easy and profitable targets for thieves.”
