Elderly care plans spring into action

Plans for a new £9.5million care home in Darley Dale have been given the go–ahead has part of a shake up of older people’s services.

Work on the site, which will be located on land next to the Whitworth Hospital, in Bakewell Road, is due to start in spring next year following the decision by Derbyshire County Council’s regulatory and planning committee this week.

The specialist community care centre will provide 16 long–term residential beds for people with dementia, 16 short–term residential beds for people needing intermediate and respite care and day care facilities for use by visiting day care patients, residents and visitors.

There will also be a reception area, office accommodation, a kitchen, café and dining area as well as a laundry area.

The development of the specialist community care centre in Darley Dale forms part of the council’s wider £200million investment plans to transform residential and community care across Derbyshire, delivering dementia–friendly care and modern, purpose–built accommodation for older people.

Derbyshire County Council cabinet member for adult care, Charles Jones, said: “We are delighted that planning permission has been granted for our specialist community care centre in Darley Dale.

“The scheme will be a focal point for services for local older people across the Derbyshire Dales, including people with dementia, and complement the local NHS facilities.

“It is another great step forward in our plans to transform care and accommodation needs of local older people.”

The council has produced a short film showcasing its wider plans for care in the county, which can be viewed by visiting www.derbyshire.gov.uk/transformingcare

It will hold consultations at all council–run residential homes that could be affected by the scheme.

The authority claims that no decisions will be made until after the consultations have been carried out.
