Exciting curriculum at ‘outstanding’ school

A school’s ethos to make its curriculum exciting for pupils has won it an ‘outstanding’ grade following inspection.

Darley Dale Primary School, in Greenaway Lane, was labelled ‘outstanding’ in all areas in its latest Ofsted report – an improvement on the previous 2009 report which found it to be ‘good’ overall.

Head teacher Peter Hughes said: “We’re thrilled to bits.

Our outcomes and achievements have always been high, the report highlights the good relationship we have between the staff and children and how we provide an exciting curriculum – when you have an exciting curriculum you have more chance of learning.

“It’s been part of our school ethos now for six or seven years.”

He said the school aimed to provide memorable learning opportunities for the children which help them learn through real life situations, as well as photographs, drama and speaking and learning exercises.

The inspector commented that the school inspires pupils to thrive in all aspects of their academic achievement and personal development.

It said teachers’ lessons were carefully planned to challenge pupils and that teachers develop pupils’ personal qualities and teamwork skills to the full – enabling pupils to work very successfully in partnership them to extend their learning.

The report said: “Pupils are highly motivated and work exceptionally well together.

“They repay staff’s trust in them through their outstanding behaviour in lessons and by trying their best.”

Chairman of governors Diane Peet said: “It is wonderful to get such positive feedback on the school.

“However, we will not rest on our laurels – we are constantly working to improve our standards and the quality of the education we provide.

“We will take on board the inspector’s comments and continue the good work.”

Mr Hughes added: “This is a real team effort and is down to the commitment and dedication of all our staff, governors and community. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their hard work and enthusiasm.”
